CHAPTER WINNER:

Inland NW AGC

HEAD START TO THE CONSTRUCTION TRADES

While Inland NW AGC established the Head Start to the Construction Trades program to address a worker shortage issue in Spokane, the result has changed the lives of people who were previously without a career path. The chapter recognized that the best way to address an aging workforce was to provide quality, efficient, safe training for future craftspeople. They created a six-week pre-apprenticeship program that provides experience and certificates to allow entry into a construction trade apprenticeship. The chapter program has trained more than 150 people, and more than 62 percent have found employment. Not only does the program provide necessary training, but it also provides life skills training, including housing and counseling, which has made a significant impact with the inmates at Spokane County Geiger Correctional Facility. The chapter also established a partnership with Newtech Skills Center that includes internships for high school students at chapter member companies. The six-week program includes 180 hours of instruction, half of which is spent in the field.

CHAPTER SPECIAL RECOGNITION WINNERS:

Nevada Contractors Association (Las Vegas Chapter)

HEALING WALL FOR LAS VEGAS COMMUNITY HEALING GARDEN

Following the horrific mass shooting that took place at the Harvest Music Festival on October 1, the city of Las Vegas offered a quarter acre of land for the community to build a healing garden that would serve as a place of remembrance for those who lost their lives. The land was quickly populated with donations, including tupelo trees and painted rocks. However, a temporary wood wall that displayed victims’ memorabilia began to deteriorate over time. The Construction Leadership Council of the chapter partnered with Get Outdoors Nevada to build a permanent wall structure, supported by donations from chapter member companies. To keep the same look and feel of the original wall, the team constructed the new wall with steel and wood, but included upgrades, such as a tranquil water feature and a new walkway to the site. They completed the project in 39 days, in time for the first anniversary memorial event.

AGC of Missouri

SPECIAL OLYMPICS OF MISSOURI – TRAINING FOR LIFE CAMPUS

This facility provides medical and athletic facilities for Special Olympics athletes in the Central United States. AGC members contributed property for the 16-acre facility, materials, labor, and funding for the project, as well as a dedication plaque. The final project is a first-in-the-nation and the largest Training for Life facility in the world, and serves as a home for the athletes, coaches, volunteers, and staff of the program. Chapter employees volunteered to coordinate the work of contractors and suppliers for the $10.5 million project, which also provided hundreds of jobs for the local community and, as a home for various sporting events, will continue to generate economic benefits for years to come.

MEMBER SPECIAL RECOGNITION WINNERS:

25TH ANNIVERSARY COMMUNITY OUTREACH CAMPAIGN

Pepper Construction of Indiana

As community outreach has played a key role in Pepper’s business, it was natural that the community became a key part of the company’s 25th anniversary celebration. Each month leading up to the August birthday event, Pepper organized drives and volunteer days for nonprofit organizations and projects. Projects ranged from clothing and food drives to building a community garden and volunteering at the Humane Society. In just eight months, Pepper’s efforts positively impacted veterans, children, animals, domestic violence victims, and others living in poverty. The goal from the beginning of this project was to have a direct impact on the people of Indianapolis, and to build relationships with future partner organizations. More than 100 Pepper employees volunteered their time and/or donated materials and funds to this effort.

ROCCO’S SKATE PARK

Erickson-Hall Construction CO.

Through involvement with the AGC Build and Serve Committee and the Make-A-Wish program, Erickson-Hall employees met nine-year-old Rocco, who is suffering from a rare blood cancer. Rocco loves to skateboard, but his illness made it impossible for him to use local parks. As the company had already built the Sidewinder Skate Park in El Centro, it seemed a perfect fit to build Rocco a skate park in his own backyard. In less than a month, the team developed a park design for Rocco to review. Erickson-Hall donated the surface material, lumber, and other materials, in addition to the time and expertise of the crew. In the end, 14 Erickson-Hall employees, along with Rocco’s father – a general contractor – and his employees, as well as Make-A-Wish volunteers and Kyle Berard of Front Rock, a national skate park construction company, all worked to make Rocco’s dream a reality. The project grew into more than any of the team originally expected. When the project was complete, professional skateboarder Tony Hawk visited the park and Rocco.

MISSOULA UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Jackson Contractor Group, Inc.

Nearly three thousand people attended the inaugural Missoula Under Construction, a fun family event that introduced children to careers in construction, while involving the entire community. Jackson Contractor Group brought together more than 40 sponsors for the event, raising over $95,000 in cash and in-kind donations. Children climbed on and operated five pieces of heavy equipment in Fort Missoula Regional Park, with the help of Jackson Contractor Group operators, and twenty-four other pieces of equipment on site to view. Inside the “When I Grow Up” tent, kids learned about electricity, construction tools, drywalling, masonry, and plumbing. The local food bank provided free lunches for children, while the local hospital provided first aid. Life Flight helicopter and police squad car provided even more for the kids to explore.

MEMBER WINNER:

PENTA

VETERANS VILLAGE CRISIS INTERVENTION CENTER

The Barefoot Mile is a one-mile barefoot walk to raise awareness about human trafficking, and to allow participants to walk in solidarity with children in poverty, who are the most vulnerable to trafficking. Davis Constructors & Engineers partnered with Joy International, Priceless, MyHouse and Covenant House to present the first Anchorage Barefoot Mile fundraiser on May 20, 2017, ultimately drawing over 358 walkers and 68 volunteers, and raising more than $203,000 to fight human trafficking. The team’s goal was to help the most vulnerable, as 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 5 boys receiving services from Covenant House Alaska in 2017 was reported as being a victim of human trafficking, the fastest-growing crime in the world today. The funds raised will assist in the rescue, restoration, reintegration and prevention of human trafficking in Alaska, the U.S. and internationally.
